You Belong To Jesus
What does it really mean to be a bondservant of Jesus Christ? In this message, Pastor DaVon reveals the difference between simply working for Jesus and recognizing that you belong to Jesus. Acts 19:13-16
Then some of the itinerant Jewish exorcists took it upon themselves to call the name of the Lord Jesus over those who had evil spirits, saying, “We exorcise you by the Jesus whom Paul preaches.” 14 Also there were seven sons of Sceva, a Jewish chief priest, who did so. 15 And the evil spirit answered and said, “Jesus I know, and Paul I know; but who are you?” 16 Then the man in whom the evil spirit was leaped on them, overpowered them, and prevailed against them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded.
Do you know who you are?
Does the spiritual world know who you are?
If you don’t know who you are, life will beat you up.
We live in a culture where people are trying to experiment with who they are.
The culture we live in says you are whatever you feel you are.
People are looking to feelings, experiences, relationships, careers, sexuality, politics, social media, and other people’s opinions to answer one of life’s most fundamental questions: Who am I?
Society says, “Find yourself.”
Scripture says, “Find yourself in Christ.”
Identity is how you see yourself
Identity provides purpose.
Who does God say you are?
New Creation:
2 Corinthians 5:17 - Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.
Born Again:
John 3:3-6 - Jesus answered and said to him, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.” 4 Nicodemus said to Him, “How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother’s womb and be born?” 5 Jesus answered, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. 6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.
Complete in Him:
Colossians 2:9-10 - For in Him dwells all the fullness of the Godhead bodily; 10 and you are complete in Him, who is the head of all principality and power.
No lack, no deficiency, no inadequacy, no loss, nothing missing in Him.
If you are complete in Him, then you don’t have to look outside of Him to discover who you are.
Just Like Jesus:
Romans 8:28-30
We are called to be conformed to the image of His Son.
You are called to look like Jesus.
Galatians 2:20 - I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me.
Your identity changed at the cross.
The person you used to be no longer exists.
The person you want to be no longer matters.
Your Life Is Not Your Own:
1 Corinthians 6:19-20 NLT - Don’t you realize that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who lives in you and was given to you by God? You do not belong to yourself, 20 for God bought you with a high price. So you must honor God with your body.
A Bondservant:
Romans 1:1; Philippians 1:1; Titus 1:1; Galatians 1:10; Jude 1:1; 2 Peter 1:1; James 1:1
These verses show how Paul described himself as a bondservant, fully devoted to serving Jesus.
Paul begins by identifying whose he is before explaining what he does.
Before Paul tells you his assignment, he tells you who his master is.
Identity: I belong to Jesus.
Assignment: I am called to be an apostle.
Belonging completely to Christ is an honor.
There’s a difference between a slave and a bondservant
You are more than a slave; you are a bond slave.
Slave: A person who is the legal property of another and is forced to obey. Forced labor. No freedom or autonomy.
A slave was not simply a hired employee who could clock out whenever he wanted.
Slavery is control and abuse with no choice
Bondservant or Bond slave: A person who serves another by voluntary choice, willingly serves a master because they love him.
When Paul called himself a “bondservant of Christ,” he wasn’t saying he was forced into it. He chose to give his life fully to Jesus because he trusted Him. It was about love and loyalty, not control or abuse.
He wasn’t saying, “I work for Jesus.” He was saying, “I belong to Jesus. My life is His. My will is submitted to His will. My assignment comes from Him.”
Christianity isn’t about doing things for Jesus. It’s about recognizing that your life belongs to Jesus.
Philippians 2:5-8
Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, 6 who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, 7 but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men. 8 And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross.
Jesus made Himself a bondservant
A bondservant chooses to serve out of love, not fear.
God doesn’t force us into servitude. He invites us into a relationship.
True freedom is found in surrendering fully to Jesus.
When you become a bondservant, the master is responsible for you.
You no longer have to take care of yourself
The Lord will befriend you, protect you, provide for you, and direct you
1 Corinthians 7:22-23 NLT
And remember, if you were a slave when the Lord called you, you are now free in the Lord. And if you were free when the Lord called you, you are now a slave of Christ. 23 God paid a high price for you, so don’t be enslaved by the world.
Jesus isn’t just the One I serve. He is the One I belong to.
You were once a slave to sin, but now you are a bondservant of righteousness
