    Acts‬ ‭19‬:‭13-16‬ 

Then some of the itinerant Jewish exorcists took it upon themselves to call the name of the Lord Jesus over those who had evil spirits, saying, “We exorcise you by the Jesus whom Paul preaches.” 14 Also there were seven sons of Sceva, a Jewish chief priest, who did so. 15 And the evil spirit answered and said, “Jesus I know, and Paul I know; but who are you?” 16 Then the man in whom the evil spirit was leaped on them, overpowered them, and prevailed against them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded.

  • Do you know who you are?

  • Does the spiritual world know who you are?

  • If you don’t know who you are, life will beat you up. 

We live in a culture where people are trying to experiment with who they are. 

The culture we live in says you are whatever you feel you are.

People are looking to feelings, experiences, relationships, careers, sexuality, politics, social media, and other people’s opinions to answer one of life’s most fundamental questions: Who am I?

Society says, “Find yourself.”

Scripture says, “Find yourself in Christ.”

  • Identity is how you see yourself 

  • Identity provides purpose.

Who does God say you are?

New Creation:

  • 2 Corinthians 5:17 - Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.

  • The inward man is being renewed day by day (2 Corinthians 4:16)

  • New strength, new energy, new mercy, new grace

Born Again:

  • John 3:3-6 - Jesus answered and said to him, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.” 4 Nicodemus said to Him, “How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother’s womb and be born?” 5 Jesus answered, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. 6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. 

Complete in Him:

  • Colossians 2:9-10 - For in Him dwells all the fullness of the Godhead bodily; 10 and you are complete in Him, who is the head of all principality and power.

  • No lack, no deficiency, no inadequacy, no loss, nothing missing in Him. 

  • If you are complete in Him, then you don’t have to look outside of Him to discover who you are.

Just Like Jesus:

  • You are called to be conformed to the image of His Son. You are called to look like Jesus. (Romans 8:28-30) 

  • Galatians 2:20 - I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me.

  • Your identity changed at the cross.

  • The person you used to be no longer exists.

  • The person you want to be no longer matters.

Living Sacrifice: 

Romans 12:1-2 NLT

And so, dear brothers and sisters, I plead with you to give your bodies to God because of all he has done for you. Let them be a living and holy sacrifice—the kind he will find acceptable. This is truly the way to worship him. 2 Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.

  • What does a living sacrifice look like? Not conforming to the world. 

  • The world consists of the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life. (1 John 2:15-16)

  • You still live, but sacrifice what your flesh desires

  • Sacrifice is not fun!

1 Corinthians 6:19-20 NLT

Don’t you realize that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who lives in you and was given to you by God? You do not belong to yourself, 20 for God bought you with a high price. So you must honor God with your body.

  • God purchased your whole spirit, soul, and body, not just your spirit.

  • The Holy Spirit lives in you

  • 1 Peter 1:18-19

Romans 14:7-8 NLT

For we don’t live for ourselves or die for ourselves. 8 If we live, it’s to honor the Lord. And if we die, it’s to honor the Lord. So whether we live or die, we belong to the Lord.

  • You belong to the Lord. You do not belong to yourself.

  • People generally treat things that belong to others worse than their own possessions, often showing less care, maintenance, or caution with borrowed or shared items.

  • People often become overcautious when treating something very expensive, brand-new, or deeply sentimental. 

2 Corinthians 5:15 NLT

He died for everyone so that those who receive his new life will no longer live for themselves. Instead, they will live for Christ, who died and was raised for them.

  • If you decide to receive new life in Christ, you forfeit the right to live for yourself. 

  • I don’t mean to bust your bubble, but you do not get to do what you want to do. 

Philippians 1:20-21 NLT

For I fully expect and hope that I will never be ashamed, but that I will continue to be bold for Christ, as I have been in the past. And I trust that my life will bring honor to Christ, whether I live or die. 21 For to me, living means living for Christ, and dying is even better.

  • Living for Christ means bringing Him honor

  • What you do with your body, appetite, sexuality, energy, health, and ability should bring glory to God.
