‭‭‭‭Acts‬ ‭19‬:‭13-16‬

Then some of the itinerant Jewish exorcists took it upon themselves to call the name of the Lord Jesus over those who had evil spirits, saying, “We exorcise you by the Jesus whom Paul preaches.” 14 Also there were seven sons of Sceva, a Jewish chief priest, who did so. 15 And the evil spirit answered and said, “Jesus I know, and Paul I know; but who are you?” 16 Then the man in whom the evil spirit was leaped on them, overpowered them, and prevailed against them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded.

  • Do you know who you are?

  • Does the spiritual world know who you are?

  • If you don’t know who you are, life will beat you up.

We live in a culture where people are trying to experiment with who they are.

The culture we live in says you are whatever you feel you are.

People are looking to feelings, experiences, relationships, careers, sexuality, politics, social media, and other people’s opinions to answer one of life’s most fundamental questions: Who am I?

Society says, “Find yourself.”

Scripture says, “Find yourself in Christ.”

  • Identity is how you see yourself

  • You are not who you used to be.

  • Identity provides purpose.

Who does God say you are?

New Creation
Born Again

Complete in Him

Just Like Jesus

Your Life Is Not Your Own:

A Bondservant

You Are An Heir

John 8:37-47

  • There is a prevalent thought that all of humanity is God’s children

  • Your father the devil

John 1:12-13

John 3:1-8

  • Born again, born from above, new spiritual birth

Romans‬ ‭8‬:‭14‬-‭17‬

For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God. For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, “Abba, Father.” The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him, that we may also be glorified together.

  • “Abba, Father” reveals the heart of God as a tender, approachable Father

  • “Abba” is an Aramaic word that means “father”, but it carries a more personal, affectionate tone, much like saying “Dad” or “Papa” today.

  • “Abba, Father” means that God isn’t just the Father, He’s my Father

  • Joint heir - joint participant or partner

Galatians 4:4-7

But when the fullness of the time had come, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the law, to redeem those who were under the law, that we might receive the adoption as sons. And because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into your hearts, crying out, “Abba, Father!” Therefore you are no longer a slave but a son, and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ.

2 Sides of the same coin

2 different aspects of the same salvation

New birth changed your nature.

Adoption changed your status and position
New birth put you in the family

Adoption gives you something (inheritance)

Inheritance:

  • Inheritance is a portion assigned to you

  • Heir - one who receives the portion assigned to you

  • God will give you all that He has given Christ.

  • You inherit all that He is, and all that He has

  • Your inheritance includes access to excess.

  • Your inheritance is what belongs to you because you belong to Christ.

  • Your inheritance isn’t based on what you’ve earned. It’s based on what family you belong to.

  • Your inheritance includes His Presence, His Power, His Promises, and His Provision.

What is included in our inheritance?

  • God Himself — Our greatest inheritance is relationship and fellowship with the Father. (Romans 8:15–17)

  • Eternal life — “That being justified by his grace, we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life.” (Titus 3:7)

  • The Holy Spirit — The Spirit is called the “earnest of our inheritance”—the guarantee/down payment of what is ours. (Ephesians 1:13–14)

  • The Kingdom of God — We are heirs of the kingdom God has promised. (James 2:5; Matthew 25:34)

  • The promises of God — Hebrews 6:12; Galatians 3:29.

  • Righteousness — Noah became “heir of the righteousness which is by faith.” In Christ, we receive righteousness, not earn it. (Hebrews 11:7; 2 Corinthians 5:21)

  • Grace — Peter describes believers as “heirs together of the grace of life.” (1 Peter 3:7)

  • Salvation in its fullness — Hebrews 1:14 calls believers those “who shall be heirs of salvation.” This ultimately includes resurrection and complete deliverance from sin and death.

  • Glory with Christ — Romans 8:17 connects being joint-heirs with ultimately being “glorified together” with Him. (See also Colossians 3:4.)

  • Resurrection and an immortal body — Our inheritance ultimately includes the redemption of our bodies. (Romans 8:23; 1 Corinthians 15:52–53)

  • The renewed creation — Peter says believers look for “new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness.” Revelation describes God’s people reigning with Him. (2 Peter 3:13; Revelation 22:5)
