Proverbs 23:7 NKJV
For as he thinks in his heart, so is he…
Do you know who you are?
People are looking to feelings, experiences, relationships, careers, sexuality, politics, social media, and other people’s opinions to answer one of life’s most fundamental questions: Who am I?
Our society says you are whatever you feel you are.
Society says, “Find yourself.”
Scripture says, “Find yourself in Christ.”
Identity is how you see yourself
You are not who you used to be.
Identity provides purpose.
If you don’t know who you are, life will beat you up.
Who does God say you are?
New Creation
Born Again
Complete in Him
Just Like Jesus
Your Life Is Not Your Own
A Bondservant
You Are An Heir
2 Corinthians 8:9 KJV
For ye know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that, though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, that ye through his poverty might be rich.
Grace - unmerited, unearned, undeserved kindness and favor; to give preferential treatment, to give the advantage
Poor – lacking in any area of your life; having little or no money, goods, or other means of support
Poverty - the condition of one destitute of riches and abundance
Rich – more than enough; abundantly supplied
When did Jesus become poor?
Most commentators believe that Jesus was poor when he left heaven to come to the earth through incarnation. But reading the Bible will show you that Jesus was not poor on the earth.
People say Jesus was poor, and that's why He was born in a manger. Why was Jesus born in a manger? No lodging available (Luke 2:1-7)
As a baby, Jesus received gifts from the wise men (2M-4M) (Matthew 2:11)
Jesus had a house (Matthew 13:1)
Jesus distinguished himself from the poor (John 12:8)
He came to preach the gospel to the poor (Luke 4:18)
He met the needs of others (poor people can’t do that)
He provided for at least 12 full-time employees who left their jobs.
Jesus’ ministry financially assisted the poor regularly
Jesus had a full-time money manager traveling with Him who was stealing from the group, and there was so much extra that Jesus never even stopped him. (John 12:6)
Jesus went about doing good - philanthropy (Acts 10:38)
Jesus rode a donkey that had never been ridden before (new stuff) (Luke 19:30-31)
When Jesus was crucified, His clothes were so nice that the soldiers gambled to see who would get them. (John 19:23-24)
I believe the only moment Jesus could be considered poor was when He was whipped, beaten, and left naked on the cross.
Jesus wasn’t poor because He lacked something; He became poor because He was giving something.
One purpose of his death, burial, and resurrection was to make you rich.
You are a new creation. You are complete in Him. You are a child of God. You are a bondservant. You are an heir. And YOU ARE RICH.
It’s not what you possess; it’s what Christ accomplished for you.
Being rich doesn’t mean you currently have everything. Being rich means that in Christ, you have access to everything you need to fulfill your assignment.
1. Jesus was rich
Before He came to the earth
While He was on the earth
2. He became poor
For your sakes
On the cross
His sacrifice changed who you are and what belongs to you in Christ.
3. That you might be rich
This includes money, but it also includes:
2 Corinthians 9:8 KJV And God is able to make all grace abound toward you; that ye, always having all sufficiency in all things, may abound to every good work.
All grace. Always. All sufficiency. All things. Every good work.
That’s biblical abundance.
Rich doesn’t necessarily mean “millionaire”
You are rich because heaven’s resources are available for your God-given assignment.
Rich in grace.
Rich in faith.
Rich in wisdom.
Rich in peace.
Rich in relationships.
Rich in spiritual gifts.
Rich in opportunity.
Rich in purpose.
Rich in material resources.
YOU ARE RICH is your new identity.
I didn’t call you rich. The Bible did.
“Well, Pastor, why don’t I feel rich?”
You can have little in your possession and still have a rich identity.
You must distinguish your current circumstances from your identity.
Your identity in Christ will change your circumstances.
Stop identifying yourself by what you don’t have. Identify yourself by what Jesus has provided.
Repeat after me:
I do not identify with what’s in my bank account.
I do not identify with what I lack.
What I don’t have does not determine who I am.
I do not identify with my current situation. What I’m going through is not who I am.
Jesus became poor for me, so that I could be made rich.
Because of Jesus, I AM RICH!
I am rich in grace.
I am rich in purpose.
I am rich in wisdom.
I am rich in favor.
I am rich in the promises of God.
I am rich financially.
I AM RICH!
