Notes
Proverbs 23:7
As a man thinks in his heart, so is he
Your life goes in the direction of your most dominant thoughts
You bring about what you think about
Isaiah 8:11 NLT
The Lord has given me a strong warning not to think like everyone else does
Whoever or whatever voices are “informing” you are also “forming” you
Thoughts - Words - Actions - Habits - Character - Destiny
If you want to change the direction of your life, you must first change the direction of your thinking.
Every thought has a source. It is either authored by God or the devil.
Romans 12:1-2
I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.
Beseech - to urge or to beg
Mercies - benefits (Psalm 103:1-5)
You present - not God, deny yourself.
Reasonable service - your way to worship
Renew - renewal, renovation, complete change
Your mind is the control center of your life
Mind - mentality, philosophy, way of thinking, thought life, reasonings
Mind consists of your conscious, subconscious, and conscience
The conscious mind, subconscious mind, and conscience are three distinct aspects of how we think, process information, make decisions, and determine what is right or wrong.
Renewing your mind involves intentionally changing how you think by bringing your thinking into agreement with God’s Word.
Conscience
The part of your awareness that evaluates right and wrong, morals and values.
Helps you process whether your actions align with your understanding of what is right.
Your conscience can:
Warn you about wrongdoing.
Produce feelings of guilt.
Affirm decisions you believe are right.
Accuse or excuse your behavior.
Your conscience is not a trustworthy guide unless your mind is being renewed to the Word of God
Conscious Mind
The part of you that thinks, reasons, and makes intentional decisions.
Responsible for what you are actively aware of at any given moment.
The conscious mind allows you to:
Think deliberately.
Make decisions.
Analyze information.
Reason through situations.
Focus your attention.
Choose your actions.
Evaluate and process what you hear and see.
Example: You hear someone preaching about God’s provision. Your conscious mind processes the message and says: “I believe God will provide for me.” You are intentionally choosing to believe what you have heard.
Subconscious Mind
The part of your mental processing that influences you without requiring conscious attention.
Your subconscious processes contribute to:
Established habits.
Automatic reactions.
Learned emotional responses.
Familiar patterns of behavior. (like riding a bike)
Skills you perform through experience without thinking
Set on autopilot.
Example: You consciously believe, “God will supply all my needs.” But when an unexpected bill arrives, your immediate response is fear. Why? Over the years, you’ve conditioned yourself to automatically associate financial uncertainty with danger. This doesn’t necessarily mean you lack faith. It means your learned responses have not yet caught up with your consciously held beliefs.
Your subconscious will keep you in the comfort zone
Designed to keep you where you are
Subconscious mind rejects change
Controls the mental activity deep within you and sets the boundary for your life.
Ephesians 4:23 CEV
Let the Spirit change your way of thinking
You can change what you consciously think before your automatic responses begin to change.
Renewing the mind goes deep down into the subconscious mind and changes the autopilot.
Consistency and repetition are important in developing new habits.
