Notes

Acts 2:1-6

  • Pentecost means 50 days after the resurrection

  • Suddenly - something that happens unexpectedly

  • Sound - a loud, noisy, and violent deafening roar; BOOM

  • The sound came from heaven and not from the earth.

  • The wind is invisible but very impactful

  • Even though they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, everyone had an individual experience in a community setting.

  • The first thing the Holy Spirit changes when He comes into your life is your tongue

  • Never be afraid of “tongues” because it's in your Bible

Mark 1:8

I indeed baptized you with water, but He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.

  • Baptize – to fully immerse; submerge; dip and dye; stain

  • 3 different baptisms: salvation, water, Holy Spirit

John 1:33

I did not know Him, but He who sent me to baptize with water said to me, ‘Upon whom you see the Spirit descending, and remaining on Him, this is He who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.’

Luke 3:16

John answered, saying to all, “I indeed baptize you with water; but One mightier than I is coming, whose sandal strap I am not worthy to loose. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.

Matthew 3:11

I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance, but He who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.

  • One of the most powerful ways the Scriptures describe the Holy Spirit is as fire.

  • When the Holy Spirit comes, He doesn’t come to visit. He comes to fill you with fire, purpose, and power.

  • A Christian is not permitted to be lukewarm. Your default state is fire.

  • You were designed to burn: to radiate God's presence, passion, and power.

  • At home, you are on fire!

  • At work, you are on fire!

  • At the gym, you are on fire!

  • At church, you are on fire!

  • Wherever you go, you are on fire

  • The temperature in the Kingdom of God is fire

  • Fire consumes, purifies, and empowers.

  • The gift of the Holy Spirit wasn’t meant to be a one-time event.

    Acts 2:38-39

Then Peter said to them, “Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. For the promise is to you and to your children, and to all who are afar off, as many as the Lord our God will call.”

  • The Holy Spirit is not limited to the early apostles

Acts 2:12-15

  • Notice that spirit-filled believers are compared to drunk people.

  • Some onlookers mocked the disciples, accusing them of being drunk. Peter stood up and addressed the crowd, explaining that they were not drunk but filled with the Holy Spirit.

  • Notice the comparison of being drunk with wine and being drunk with the Spirit.

Ephesians 5:18 TPT

And don’t get drunk with wine, which is rebellion; instead, be filled continually with the Holy Spirit.

  • A person chooses to consume alcohol.

  • She gives control of her life to the influence of the alcohol.

  • Consequently, her behavior, speech, and even her thoughts change

  • A person chooses to follow the Holy Spirit.

  • She submits control of her life to His direction, power, and authority.

  • And as a result, her life is changed to the glory of God.

  • Both change your thinking, your walking, and your talking.

  • The Greek verb for "be filled" (πληροῦσθε, plērousthe) is in the present continuous tense, indicating an ongoing process.

  • This suggests that being filled with the Spirit is not a one-time event but something that should happen continually.

  • This ongoing filling empowers believers for service, boldness in proclaiming the gospel and living a Spirit-led life.

Acts 8:17

Then they laid hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit.

Closing Call to Action:

  • Are you filled with fire? Or have you settled for smoke?

Do you want to experience:

  • Fresh passion for God

  • New energy

  • New boldness and courage

  • Power over sin

I want to invite you to receive the fresh fire of the Holy Spirit today.
